ADHD medication in adults

Medication is an effective treatment option for many adults with ADHD. We guide you carefully through the choice and titration process.

Medication is one of the most researched and effective treatments for ADHD in adults. It reduces core symptoms such as concentration difficulties, impulsivity and restlessness — giving you more room to function at work, in relationships and in daily life.

At AvondFocus, we always discuss medication as part of a broader treatment plan, never as a standalone measure. We provide you with full information about your options so you can make an informed decision.

ADHD is typically treated with stimulant medication — which improves concentration and impulse control. In some cases, a non-stimulant alternative may be more suitable. Which medication fits you best is discussed in detail during your consultation.

Our approach

Start low, titrate up

We always begin with the lowest effective dose. This minimises side effects and allows us to find the right level for you specifically. ADHD medication does not work at the same dose for everyone.

Regular check-ins

During the titration phase, we have frequent contact — via secure video consultations in the evening. We measure blood pressure and heart rate, ask about your experience, and adjust the dose as needed.

Monitoring side effects

Side effects are usually mild and temporary. We actively monitor and provide practical advice: timing of doses, dietary adjustments, sleep hygiene. You can always get in touch if you have questions.

Stable dose and evaluation

Once the right dose is established, we move to periodic evaluation consultations. We assess together whether the medication is still working, whether adjustment is needed, and whether treatment can eventually be tapered.

Frequently asked questions

Is medication compulsory as part of treatment?

No, medication is never compulsory. We discuss all treatment options together — including psycho-education and coaching — and you decide which path you want to take. Medication is only started if you are fully on board with it.

Can you become addicted to ADHD medication?

When used as prescribed, the risk of addiction is very low. Stimulant medications such as methylphenidate and dexamfetamine are prescribed in controlled, therapeutic doses. People with ADHD metabolise these medications differently from people without ADHD. We monitor use carefully.

Is it safe to drive while taking ADHD medication?

This depends on the type of medication and the dosage. Stimulant medications generally improve driving ability in people with ADHD. Atomoxetine may initially cause drowsiness. We always discuss driving safety at the start of medication and provide specific advice.

How long do you need to take ADHD medication?

This varies from person to person. Some adults use medication long-term because the benefits outweigh any drawbacks. Others stop after a period of time, for example once they have learned to manage their ADHD effectively. We evaluate this regularly together.

At AvondFocus

At AvondFocus, we handle medication management in-house — as an integrated part of your ADHD treatment. You do not need to visit multiple providers. Everything takes place via secure video consultations, in the evening, so you can continue working during the day.

  • Evening appointments: All appointments take place between 18:30 and 21:30 on Wednesdays.
  • Integrated care: Medication, psycho-education and coaching are coordinated as a whole.
  • Direct access to your clinician: You always speak to the same specialist, who knows your situation.
  • Written documentation: After each consultation you receive a summary and any prescriptions digitally.

We operate outside insurance contracts, which means you receive an invoice that you can submit to your health insurer. Depending on your policy, part of the cost may be reimbursed. More information is available on the fees page.
