What to expect

What can you expect from treatment?

After diagnostics, we draw up a treatment plan together with you. Treatment consists of three parts that can run alongside each other: psychoeducation, cognitive behavioural therapy and, when appropriate, medication.

We decide together which combination works for you. Not everyone needs the same thing, and the pace also differs from person to person.

Components

Three tracks that can run side by side.

Psychoeducation

Understanding how ADHD works for you.

We start with explanation: what ADHD is, how it works in your brain, and why you notice it particularly at certain moments in your life.

Many people find this phase surprisingly helpful, not because it solves everything, but because it explains a lot about who they are and why some things feel difficult.

We also discuss what ADHD means for your work, relationships, sleep and daily structure.

Cognitive behavioural therapy

Working concretely on patterns that get stuck.

CBT is an evidence-based form of talk therapy for ADHD. We work on practical issues such as procrastination, planning and organising, emotion regulation, self-image and dealing with stimuli.

Sessions are online, in a steady rhythm, and you receive exercises to work on between appointments.

CBT is suitable for anyone with ADHD, including people who do not use medication.

Medication

Building up carefully and monitoring closely.

If medication is appropriate, we discuss it with you in detail. In adults with ADHD, stimulants are usually prescribed; these are the most researched and effective medicines for ADHD.

We always start carefully, with a low dose, and increase in small steps until we reach the effect that works for you. Non-stimulant medication is also available if stimulants turn out not to be suitable.

Medication is never a quick fix. It takes several weeks before we know whether it works and which dose suits you. During that period we stay in regular contact.

Monitoring and follow-up

Keeping close track of what works.

Once you use medication, we monitor you carefully. At the start we see you more often; later less frequently. That keeps us informed about effect, side effects and overall stability.

  • We monitor blood pressure, heart rate and weight once you start medication.
  • We watch for side effects and discuss whether the medication and dosage are working well.
  • At first we see you more often; later we reduce the frequency once things are stable.
  • If treatment is running steadily, we can in consultation transfer ongoing care and repeat prescriptions to your GP.
