Deductible for mental health care: what you need to know

The statutory deductible in 2026 is €385. It applies to all insured care — including mental health care at AvondFocus.

In short

Mental health care is included

Specialist mental health care — including ADHD treatment — falls fully under the deductible. There is no exemption as there is for GP care.

Once per year

You pay a maximum of €385 per calendar year. Once your deductible is used up, it no longer applies to further care that year. It starts again on 1 January.

You pay upfront

At AvondFocus you first pay the invoice yourself and submit it to your insurer. Read the full claims process on the page about non-contracted care.

Voluntary deductible

You can voluntarily raise your deductible to a maximum of €885 (+€500) in exchange for a lower monthly premium. But if you expect mental health treatment, this is almost never advantageous:

  • Premium saving: approx. €10–15 per month (€120–180 per year)
  • Additional out-of-pocket cost when using mental health care: €500
  • Conclusion: with a higher voluntary deductible you pay more net if you receive mental health care

Frequently asked questions

Does the deductible also apply to non-contracted mental health care?

Yes, absolutely. The statutory deductible applies to all insured mental health care, regardless of whether the provider holds a contract with your health insurer. At AvondFocus the deductible always applies once you receive insured mental health treatment.

Can I avoid the deductible by not going to a mental health provider?

If you do not use insured care, your deductible will not be drawn upon. However, consider: ADHD treatment at AvondFocus is insured specialised mental health care. The deductible is a one-off threshold per year — once it is met (€385 in 2026), it no longer applies to further care that year.

What is the voluntary deductible and should I choose a higher one?

You can voluntarily raise your deductible to a maximum of €885 per year (€385 statutory plus €500 voluntary) in exchange for a lower monthly premium. Whether this is advantageous depends on how much care you use. If you expect to receive mental health treatment, a higher voluntary deductible is almost never beneficial: you pay the deductible amount anyway, and the premium saving rarely offsets the higher out-of-pocket cost. Always check your personal situation against your policy conditions.
